I saw animals I'd only ever encountered in documentaries, heard sounds I couldn't identify, and learned that mosquito nets are truly humanity's greatest invention. It's exhausting and occasionally miserable, but also completely addictive.

Parasailing over Sihanoukville gives you a perspective on Cambodia's coastline that few people experience. Being pulled behind a speedboat while suspended from a parachute sounds scarier than it is; mostly, it's peaceful up there.

The water below is this incredible turquoise color, and the islands scattered along the coast look like something from a postcard. Just don't look down if you're afraid of heights.

Why Cambodia Surprised Me

Before this trip, I thought Cambodia had temples and a tragic history. I had no idea it was also waterfalls you have to hike three hours to reach, caves that require actual crawling, and rivers that'll test whether you're as adventurous as you claim to be.
